Coulby Newham Community Council Update

Hi Folks,

You know the saying, something like 'It never rains but it pours,' well its been doing plenty of that lately, and I'm sure it waits for me to put me wellies on to start work in the garden. All I want for Crimbo this time is some better weather or the Alan Titmarsh 'Green Team.'

Well, just to let you know, I'm taking a break from Community Council issues and other things for the moment so that I can catch up on other things, but don't worry, community issues will continue, 'business as usual.' and you will most probably find me writing on other issues somewhere else in the Coulby News. So its bye from me and hello to him/her for the rest of this page.

The Boundaries Commission will be recommending that Forum 6 (Coulby Newham on the Marton side of Marton West Beck) be taken out of Newham Ward and annexed to Marton. For Community Council purposes this area will now become part of Marton West. We'll probably see the change in operation at next year's local May Elections.

Coulby Newham is about to be awarded one Alcohol Free Zone area -' Langdon Square' only. We sent in evidence of alcohol related crimes from residents from all over Coulby Newham and actually asked for a Blanket Ban on the whole area but the Government will only allow specific areas to be dedicated that status. A big Thank You Very Much. here to everyone who submitted their supporting evidence. Please keep reporting incidents of any trouble. It's the only way more AFZ's will be will be gained. Let's hope Langdon Square example will set the scene. We'll let you know. By the way, the cost to the Community Council will be - one ad in the local paper to announce the intention of the AFZ - over £100, another when it's awarded -over £100 (but we might share with another area) + the cost of at least 4 signs - approx £65 each . plus installing. Not cheap eh? The suggestion that we give Coulby Newham roundabouts each a name has been unanimously supported at all Community Council Meetings. The Engineers Dept would like to be involved too in case we decide to give names like 'Juninho' roundabout etc. We have more roundabouts here than anywhere in the Boro . Any ideas how to proceed? Schools Competitions perhaps?

Do you remember the 'Shrubs Out' ad. in the last Coulby News ? Councillor Paul Thompson, Stewart Park and Langdon Square Community Centre got absolutely stacks of requests for help. Most have been sorted. Please let us know if yours has been missed out, (perhaps because of identification of specific area). Keith Garland, Council Troubleshooter based at Stewart Park his Officer in the Field, John McQuade, have put their hearts and souls into making a difference in Coulby Newham. They've sorted the above and carried out lots of drastic work eg. The Parkway Car Parks, Fire Station corner, Langdon Square Car Park and Square itself and more and taken out trees where they've obscured the streetlights. Credit where it's due. Thanks gems! Keith enlightened a recent Comrn. Council meeting about Landscaping Maintenance. By the way, if your tree is a nuisance in overhanging a public 1footpath the Council can ask you to cut it hack and if you don't, they will. And charge you.

Everyone will know the SAFEWAY Plans were passed by Planning Committee. Because this is such a large development they are now being examined by the Government Regional Office. Normal procedure. By May 2003, there should be 90 Neighbourhood Wardens in Middlesbrough. Some will patrol a particular area and the rest will hit the Hot Spots where needed. Regarding the Hot Spots in Forum 6 and Nunthorpe on so called 'Mischief Night'. Inspector Stohlner told us that one arrest was made and 5 names given were being investigated. Costly mischief that night, wasn't it?

Crime figures for July- September this year against last year's show a total of 272 crimes down now to 220. Good news- house burglaries are well down 40-14 (make your house look occupied at all times if you can eg light timers} Sheds/Garages burglaries slightly down. One cause for concern is Handbag Snatches - an increase from 6-13 but the Police are following several lines of inquiry so by the time you read this they may have made arrests. Don't be nervous ladies, just be aware.

Finally, Wheelie Bins in time for Christmas! If a Wheelie Bin will fit on your property, you'll be getting one- Large families can order another one. There are smaller ones if you like, loo. After the first week, no black bags will be taken apart from after a Bank Holiday. Strict rule!

After December the next round of Community Council meetings will begin in March. Hope to see you there Till then Merry Christmas and a Peaceful 2003 to all.

From Coulby Newham Community Council Executive Committee.

Hi Folks -
Here I am again. I wasn't too sure of what to chat about for this issue, unusual for me you might say, so this is going to be a bit short for this issue.

Well next year, 2003, we shall be entering Coulby Newham's 25th birthday. For those of you who were around for the 20th birthday, we celebrated with a photo exhibition, opened by Dr. Ashok Kumar MP and held in Sunnyside Information Centre. Perhaps we could do something on a similar theme, but also produce a book out of it.

So, here goes, I'm looking for volunteers again, and information. Here's the hit list.

Wanted..........................

Volunteers to work with me as a History workgroup.
People willing to offer their memories of their time in Coulby Newham.
Donations/Loans/Photos/Newsclips of your events in Coulby Newham.
Ideas of other interests.

Please get in touch with me if you want to be involved in anyway you can. Tel: Geoff Wishart 59008
