Leap into the countryside

The countryside on your doorstep is awakening this spring with a little help from Lingfield Farm Countryside Centre. If you haven't been to one of their exciting fun packed events yet then now is the ideal opportunity, as spring heralds the arrival of their vibrant new events programme. The great thing about these events too is that most of them are free and everyone is welcome!

As well as the events, there are several other ways to become involved at Lingfield:

  • The Friends of Lingfield is for those who wish to show your support for the aims of the centre and receive news on future developments and events.
  • The Lingfield Conservation Volunteers is for those who want to take an active part in conservation work in the area by joining monthly workdays.
  • Lingfield Wildlife WATCH is a dub for children aged 7 to 12, which involves them in exploring the natural environment at monthly meetings. Activities include pond dips, bird box making, creature surveys and mini-beast hunts. For a free leaflet on any of these groups contact the centre on 577325.

Hi Folks

Well Spring is in the air, but I haven't got to the confident stage of taking off my woolly jumper yet, not with those cold wintry winds blowing around my ears. I can see the daffs and the blossom on the trees are beginning to show through and soon we'll have lovely picture postcard views in Coulby Newham. Yes the daffs are beginning to show a fine display and it has been thanks to many children over the past years that have enabled this. It is just a shame that some children think differently, thinking they're for Mother's Day.

Well, it's Friday afternoon and it's dull, damp, and starting to come in dark already, so I guess we're in for some rain. Still, with 'cuppa soup' in hand and my mind ticking away nicely here goes with this issues news. You'll most probably have noticed the bridge on Stainton Way has recently been accidentally demolished. Thank God the driver managed to walk away from his cab unscathed. Someone was certainly watching over him that day to keep him safe.

Sorry about the mistake in the last issue. The barriers that I mentioned that were to be erected to prevent abuse of footpath/cycle paths were for The Birches' estate and not Beechfield.

The diggers have been in Coulby School playing field recently and I guess they've been testing out the foundations for the new City Academy. The draft plan of the Academy that we printed on the front page of our previous issue has changed too, in that the Academy has moved over slightly nearer to the Parkway Centre. Building work should start in May and when the Coulby School closes its doors this year it will be for the final time and the whole school including the Youth & Community Centre are to be completely demolished. It was hoped that the Youth & Community Centre could be saved, but the local authority say that the building would not be able to be dissected from the school, but hopefully there may be future plans for something, yet unforeseen, for the provision of some facility for the Youth in the area. The Youth & Community Centre has been a Godsend to many youth who use the facilities there. It has improved in many ways and kept the Youth occupied and helped improve their future prospects. To lose it like this and not provide anything else will be a disaster. The Management Committee of the Youth Club is in constant liaison with the local authority to see what the future holds for them and the Community Council is giving full support to them.

I've not heard much about the new Safeway's Shop development yet. Watch this space. Plans are being drawn up for a new children's play area to be sited where the old play area was on Newham Way, opposite Coulby Manor Farm, only this time to be in the open. It is planned that it will be designed only for the use of infant and junior children.

I thought we were supposed to get our wheel i.e. bins in February. Have we been forgotten about again? Proposals had been made for two offices to replace the newspaper shop in Hollowfield Square and an idea for the old doctor's surgery to be a children's nursery, but haven't heard anything for definite on this.

There still appears to be a lot of litter about. Please be considerate and take your litter home. We do have a problem with the lack of litter bins, but this is no excuse. Thank you to the council litter pickers for doing a wonderful job. Well done and congratulations to some of our doggy owners for doing your poop scooping. It hasn't been so messy around the footpaths lately.

Well, that's it for now folks. Don't forget it will soon be your chance to vote for your Mayor soon, but if you want to question the candidates before you decide, then drop in here at the centre on April 15th at 7 pm and listen to what they have to say. Have a very Happy Easter and look forward to seeing you and writing to you in the next issue.

Bye for now GEOFF WISHART (SEC)

COULBY NEWHAM FIRE STATION

Coulby Newham fire station is situated at the junction of Bickley Way and Newham Way. It is a modem purpose built station that was opened in 1985. Forty firefighters in total serve here, although they are spread over four 'watches' that rotate on a shift system. At least seven firefighters are on duty at any one time, busy serving the communities of Acklam, Brookfield, Coulby Newham, Hemlington, Marton Manor, Nunthorpe, Stainton village, Tollesby, and parts of Ormesby. We also cover Great Ayton, Stokesley, and Newby along with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. This station area ranges from dense residential to sparsely populated rural areas, providing the potential for a great variety of incidents.

The fire station houses two fire appliances, a pumping appliance and an Emergency Tender, also Cleveland Fire Brigades only line rescue unit. The pumping appliance generally stays within the above mentioned areas. It carries five personnel and responds to all emergency incidents that could include; house fires, farm fires, car fires, road traffic accidents (RTA 's), or anything else the public needs assistance with. The emergency tender carries two persons. It is mobilised in support of fire appliances, normally to incidents that require specialist equipment, most commonly RTA's, but also others including lift rescues, animal rescues, chemical and radiation incidents, incidents requiring lighting, and large incidents needing a command and control facility. The line rescue unit gives us the ability to carry out cliff rescues, sewer rescues, and rescue from high structures that are abundant in local industry. The unit covers the whole of the Cleveland area and some neighbouring brigade areas.

Whilst on station, firefighters are employed in a wide range of activities. Much time is taken up with a routine training and lecture programme and maintenance of equipment, but integrated within this is physical training and Community Fire safety work. It is an increasingly large part of our role to pass on the fire safety message to schools, nurseries, youth organisations, and the public at large via community events and displays.

This is a brief description of Coulby Newham fire station and the work we do there. I hope it has sparked your interest, if so, then the, doors to your local fire station are always 'open', and the firefighters more than willing to show people round, offer advice and answer any questions you may have.

Coulby Newham Golden Jubilee Celebrations

Hi folks.

As you will already know from various media, this year is the celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. To celebrate the occasion I am working on a week of entertainment in Coulby Newham. This will run from Monday 24th June and will end with a Family Carnival at Newham Grange Leisure Farm on Saturday 29th June from 11 am - 4 pm. Although I say that I am planning a week of entertainment, some of this will very much depend on funding.

Who will open the Family Carnival? I'm not too sure yet, but we would like a Jubilee Queen. If you are aged between 12 years and 16 years, are prepared to wear a dress, (we can compromise on this) escort a celebrity around, please write a short essay on why you would like to be the Jubilee Queen and include a small photo of yourself and send it to Geoff Wishart at Langdon Square Community Centre, Coulby Newham, TS8 OTF. (Last day for essays will be May 10th) So don't delay, start putting pen to paper.

The Family Carnival for the 29th June is definitely on the way. I am working with Tracy Farbridge, the Assistant Manager of the farm, and a voluntary committee, to plan events for the day. Already, we have various displays such as the Redcar Dog Agility, Miniature Railway, Zanshin Karate, Michelle James Tap & Ballet, Gymnastics, Folk Dancing, Morris Dancing, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Fairground rides, pony rides, craft stalls, refreshments, and many others. A programme of events will be available for the next issue of the Coulby News.

Also requested: Volunteers, members to join our carnival committee, anyone interested in taking some photos to record the day, wardens, guides, could you put on a display, would you like to book a table for sale of craft and other wares, if there is anything you can do that will provide some entertainment or whatever for everybody's enjoyment to celebrate this occasion then I am waiting to here from you. Please contact me as soon as possible as June is not that far away.
