Hi Folks
Here we go then for the
best hot summer season ever. I'm saying this in the hope that some
magic genie hears me, believes me and grants me a wish. Well we haven't
done too badly now have we. Still instead of rubbing a magic lamp
for good fortune I wouldn't mind rubbing shoulders with those lucky
Darlington couples with their lottery wins,...never mind, I wouldn't
know what to do with all that money anyway, would you?
Well here goes then,...... firstly apologies again as due to unforeseen
circumstances, the Summer Workshops for children 8 years - 11 years
at Langdon Square Community Centre will now start, fingers crossed,
on Monday 13th August, and run for 3 weeks to 31st August. Sorry for
all the hiccups. Don't forget there will be two playschemes running
for children 5 years to 14 years, at so if you want to get the kids
occupied and off the streets then get them there, they'll enjoy every
minute of it.
The new Coulby Medical Centre is now open, and looks really smart
inside and outside. Nice one to all concerned. There should be some
movement shortly with the Safeway development, mainly highway construction.
There will be some slight road diversions and closures near the bottle
bank area during the construction, so take care how you drive around
them. Please note, Cropton Way will still have access to the Medical
Centre.
Seems like the Fitness Centre is up and running, or all the health
fanatics are. I'm glad they called it the Fitness Centre too, cause
I had a hell of job spelling Bannatynes! Is that right?
Many thanks to more than 3,000 people who signed the petition to have
the area south of Ladgate Lane / Low Lane declared an Alcohol Free
Zone. (in public places).
Support for the petition was overwhelming! Special thanks to the staff
at the Hospice Shop in the Parkway Centre for collecting the Coulby
News tear off slips and also to the Rainbow Library Staff for collecting
so many completed petition forms. Well done to all who signed. The
petition will be presented to the Leader of Middlesbrough Council,
Councillor Ken Walker, on Monday 23rd July, and then it will be up
to Middlesbrough Council to present the petition to the government
on our behalf, for authorising. Have you heard that other areas in
the Boro are starting their own petitions and collecting signatures
too? Keep up the good work folks.
As you will most probably be aware, Langdon Square Community Centre
was hit again over a weekend in July. First a couple of windows, then
a break-in. For those that broke in to the centre, what they took
would be lucky to get them a couple of pints at their local. They
caused more damage to the centre than anything else, and thanks to
the council workers, caretaking staff and volunteers who did a wonderful
job getting the place back in order.
AGE CONCERN are coming back into Langdon Square Community centre again
to give information and advice. They'll be giving it another try to
see how things go and you will be able to catch them in the centre
on the last Wednesday of the month. The first one will be August 29th
from 12 noon until 3pm.
And Finally, Teesside hospice are on the lookout for more volunteers
who are willing to work in their other shops around the town. Thank
you to all who have recently come forward.
Best Wishes
Your sec. Geoff Wishart

The Queen's Golden Jubilee Celebrations 2002
Hi folks
Well, as you may or may not know,
next year is the Queen's Golden Jubilee and as we usually do on these occasions,
we get the flags and bunting out and party or celebrate in whichever way
we choose. Next year the months from may to July have been chosen to allow
the public to prepare celebrations of their choice to mark the occasion.
So here goes...
Members of the Coulby Newham Community Council have discussed the issue
and are
Considering the organisation of a Carnival of some sort to celebrate the
occasion. We are also hoping that everyone in Coulby Newham will participate
in some way or other, including the shops, schools, churches, and other
organisations. It would be nice to see us celebrate a full week, from the
Monday to the Friday, and then hold the Carnival on the Saturday. Perhaps
during the week people could organise street parties, games, decorate their
neighbourhood, whatever comes to mind. The Carnival for the Saturday will
be a big job to organise and will need a lot of help and support. Would
you be willing to volunteer your help? We anticipate a large event, with
all kinds of activities, displays, stalls shows, music and dance, competitions.....
and endless other things. We have already had a good response from people
so far, so please, if you want to help give me a buzz as soon s possible.
Please don't forget you don't need to be a professional to be a volunteer.
Volunteers will only be expected to do what they are capable of doing, nothing
else.
Ideas already flowing for Coulby Newham's celebrations are, Football tournaments,
Bowls tournaments, School Sports Days, Street parties Best shop Window Display,
Dances, Fairs, Information tables, and table tops, craft Fayre, Farm animals,
raffles, tombola, sweets, drinks, and crisps stall, cake stall various displays...
This is just a start..... would you like to put on a display or anything.......have
you any ideas???
If anyone would like to book a table for the Carnival we will most probably
be charging £5.00 .. but please just let us know first and we will
put you on the list. No payments will be required until we know for definite
what the interest in the Carnival will be.
If you would like to decorate your neighbourhood with flags and bunting
and organise a street party ... would you be willing to get a group of neighbours
together on your estate to arrange that. If so Please let us know... the
Coulby News Team, so that we can keep a record of what is happening.
So, if there is anyone out there who would like to volunteer, book a table,
put on a display, make a donation towards the celebrations, prizes for competitions,
the please contact GEOFF WISHART at Langdon Square Community Centre Tel
01642 599723 or leave a message, or email : geoffwishart@ntlworld.com as
soon as you can Please.
Please note- All voluntary work is unpaid. Any expenses will be reimbursed.
All funds raised from the event will go to a charity of the choice of the
community council.
Thank you all.

Going into the community
The
board of the Middlesbrough & Eston Primary Care group has decided
to go out into the community for its meetings, to give patients and members
of public the opportunity to find out more about decision making in the
NHS.
The formal part of our meetings start at 2 p.m., but Board members are
always available prior to the meeting to talk informally about the work
of the PCG and about local health services. At our next meeting, among
items for discussion will be proposed conversion of the Primary Care Group
to Primary Care Trust Status and the PCG's plans relating to quality issues.
DR. Henry Waters, Chairman of the Primary Care Group, said, 'We do our
best to make sure that our meetings are welcoming and interesting to the
public and that they can learn something of the way decisions are made
in the NHS. We are now trying to get out in the community to provide the
chance for local people to come along and learn more about how the National
health service operates at a local level and we hope they will take advantage
of it.'
The Primary Care Group is, however, having problems in finding suitable
locations to hold board meetings in the community.
Community involvement Manager, Anne Botterill, says, 'We have been looking
to hold meetings at local community centres in the Middlesbrough and Eston
areas, but all our meetings are held on Friday' afternoons and we are
finding that many community centres already have events and functions
organised. We would welcome an approach from any local community centre
or function hall, which could accommodate us. We meet at 1.30 p.m. on
one Friday of every month.'
