IS YOUR DOG MICROCHIPPED??????

If you are moving house in the near future the most important jobs you tend to first are to inform friends and family and various services of your new address, so please try not to forget one important member of your family, yes, your dog.
If he or she has been microchipped then the old address on the chip will need to be renewed.
To save distress from your pet going missing and not being returned to you please make this job one of your top priorities.
The Kennel Club operate a national registration scheme and have two methods of payment to change an address, a one off payment of £10 to cover all future moves, or a £5 payment to re-register your new address.
If you operate through the Middlesbrough Council service then they do not charge to update their records.
A form can be obtained from the Community Protection Service, PO Box 65, Vancouver House, Gurney Street, Middlesbrough, TS1 1QP.

Hi folks,

What a change it is for us to be getting so much nice weather this year instead of the odd day here and there. It's been so kind that I've actually been doing a bit of gardening. Now gardening was never really my cup of tea; like watching it on TV and the Horticultural Shows, but actually doing it myself was 'no thanks'. Is it old age creeping in that pushes us out there to dig and plant all those flowers, I wonder! Anyway, I must be doing something right because my fingers are green and my flowers are growing for a change.

On top of all that, I've been working on a friend's garden up in the Lingfield Ash neck of the woods. Some of you will have noticed, in passing, what an eyesore it looks at the moment, but it's nice to know some neighbours taking an interest in my work. It's slowly taking shape, thank you very much, tidying up at the same time and as Rome wasn't built in a day you kind neighbours will be seeing a lot more of me. Just wait until its finished. Ground Force eat your heart out. Ha! Ha!

It's a small world isn't it? Remember in my last article I was telling you of my time watching that pop group playing at the church hall and who rose to fame under the name of 'Free.' I stated that I couldn't remember the members names. All I could remember was the distinctive voice of the young lad singing. Well, after that, everything seemed to come at me quick as a flash. Whilst doing some shopping over at the Parkway Shopping Centre, a girl at the Safeway checkout point told me the singers name was Paul Rodgers, a friend told me the same and also that he was a Middlesbrough lad. A man in the checkout queue told me that Paul Rodgers was in another group named 'Bad Company.' And low and behold, whilst I was visiting a vintage vehicle show at Preston Park I came across this chap wearing a tee-shirt with the name 'Bad Company' printed on the back. I asked him if he knew anything of the group and I also told him of my query. (I forgot to mention that when I first say Paul Rodgers group playing at the church hall (St. Pius IX at Park End) I was aged between 12-14 years). This chap told me that Paul Rodgers was the lead singer with that distinctive voice and Paul Kossof, son of actor David Kossof, was one of the guitarists, and at that time of playing when I saw them they would have been called the 'Roadrunners.' He also mentioned that they still play as a group and that there is a website under Paul Rodgers name. Well how about that? And thanks to you too for the response.

At the moment I'm busying myself on a project, in my own time of course. I'm compiling information for a 'History and Antiquities of Coulby Newham.' The end product will be in CD form as I think there may be too much information to be produced as a book, but who knows. At this time, Coulby Newham is 25 years old, but it also has a good pre-history. Including this in the project I also plan to create an image of the social life of Coulby Newham. I hope that when it is complete it may benefit students in University, Colleges and Schools or anyone with an interest in Local History. I would like to see it as an information package for anyone to look back on to see how we the people of Coulby Newham lived, worked and played. Can you imagine in 100 years time our great-grandchildren asking their mums, what did Coulby Newham look like all those years ago. What were the people like etc... It's going to be a big project to work on and time consuming and if anyone would like to offer any support no matter how big or small, I'll be most grateful. I'm looking for any information, photos, newspaper clippings (of events, school classes, celebrations -will be scanned and returned to owner) anything whatsoever to do with Coulby Newham. If you can offer me any support with anything no matter how big or small, please contact me on Tel: 590081 or email

Bye for now folks Geoff Wishart

Goodbye Coulby Newham School

We had a disappointing response to our appeal for news of ex Coulby pupils, and we know there are lots of you that we would have loved to hear about, but here goes.
Thank you Mrs Sutton from Beechfield for writing about your daughter Lucy, who after leaving Coulby Newham school in 1997, went on to St Mary's 6th form to do A levels. Lucy has just finished her third year at Newcastle Dental School, and with another two years to do of her BDS course, we wish her luck.
Philippa Carr, ofLingfield Ash, and her partner Gavin Burns, of Sunnyside, both went on to Marton 6th form, and then university where they both obtained 2/1 Honours science degrees. Both are now working in medical research near Cambridge. Philippa's younger brother Richard Carr, is a junior engineer in Instrument and Design Technology, he is working in Mansfield.

Do you recognise these names? Mark and Jason Williams, Chris Cook, Stephen Wright. They were in the 5th year class 85/86, and they want to say Hi! to their classmates.

We had an interesting letter from Pauline Pitcher of Sunnyside, who reminds us that the school was used for the Coulby Newham Dance club from 1979. Pauline would like to take this opportunity to say hello to anyone who was a member, she is sure you will have happy memories of a successful club Incidentally quite a few people progressed on to gold medal standard in sequence dancing. Quite an achievement

As Coulby Newham School closes, we would like to send our Good Wishes to the teachers and pupils of the new school,King's Academy, which opens in September.

Withdrawal of the 'Dickens'£10 note

This £10 note is being withdrawn at the end of July. For several months after then most Banks, Building Societies and Post Offices will still accept them. The new style "Darwin" note will stay in circulation. The Banks of England will always Exchange old notes so if you've any stashed under the floorboards you know where to go. (often wondered if the Coulby News printing machine would churn out some decent forgeries - mmmmm!)

THE VICAR'S WIFE

We now come to the weekly jobs the vicar's wife had to fit in when running her large house with little help.

She writes,
Weekly work, Monday I do all the washing in an old fashioned Wash house with a copper boiler. My husband lights the fire for me, and he has connected a large rain water tank to the wash house, by means of a hosepipe with a tap. This saves me lifting the heavy baths, and he is usually around to empty them for me. I have a vacuum washer which I work up and down. When the clothes are ready to hang out, I have to carry the basket across the village street, through the stable yard and up a flight of steps to the drying area. Here I hang all the big laundry, sheets, pillow cases, towels, woollens ,etc. I have a line near the kitchen door that I hang out small items such as table napkins, collars, and handkerchiefs.
I try to fold the washing the same afternoon, weather permitting. I also clean the candle sticks on a Monday.
Tuesday -Is ironing day, as this takes about two hours I try to start before twelve.
Wednesday -first week-bathroom, second week hall, third week, landing and spare rooms.
Thursday -first week, bedroom, second week study, third week, dining room, clean silver and plate. On Thursday l can begin weekly work earlier as I have a woman who comes in to do heavy scrubbing work in kitchen and back stairs, she also cleans the gas cooker, and the flues of the range.
Friday - cake making and baking.
Saturday - breakfast room or cupboards and shelves.
Sunday -I goto church at 8 am, and 11 am on alternate Sunday's. In the morning I do all the fires and feed the fowls for my husband. Lunch is a light meal, Sunday supper after evensong being the chief meal.
This scheme works very well indeed but I have to be careful I do not become a slave to routine. I try to be ready to alter it at short notice to suit my husband or son (when home from school).
I tried to turn out each room every week but it was too much for me. Every room is dusted each day, and given a thorough clean on "turning out day" I use methylated spirits to clean the windows which reach from floor to ceiling and are made of separate diamond shaped panes. (What a night mare! Yvonne). I have the luxury of a window cleaner who does the outside about once a month. The silver, brass and pewter are cleaned as each room is cleaned on "turning out day". A vicarage is unique in many ways, as there are constant rings on the bell at all hours during the day in this busy little village, and all need attention. My husband has fixed up a bell connecting to his study for people wishing to speak with him, but when he is out I have to answer this bell too. I have many little ways of saving time and money . I make most of my own clothes (when??) which helps out my allowance. I use a paraffin poker which saves wood when lighting fires, I have a non electric carpet sweeper; a vacuum washing tub; a long handled polishing mop for pictures. The cinders are used again on the kitchen fire, saving coal, and the ashes fill up wet and muddy places outside in the garden. We also keep hens for fresh eggs and grow our own vegetables. Well, what a woman. Next time I will tell you how she managed their finances.

Yvonne
