Coulby News Readers know now that the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square is to be used to display various sculptures instead of one permanent sculpture.

Dr Ashok Kumar asked us to pass on His thanks to Coulby News readers for all your support for his nomination of Captain Cook for the plinth. He has sent us the list of totals and you will be pleased to know Captain Cook got the third highest.

First was Venerable Bede of Jarrow (5077)
Women at War - WWII (1037)
Captain James Cook (624) Tribute to the Horse (587)
And the rest from 176 down to 5, most under 20

WELL DONE ALL! (As a consolation for doing so well we think we should have our own statue in Captain Cook Square now.)

Lingfield Farm Community Centre needs YOU!

The development of Lingfield Farm Community Centre is a partnership between Middlesbrough Borough Council and the residents of Coulby Newham.
The Lingfield Farm Steering Group was formed over 6 years ago to decide the best use for the farm buildings. The group is made up of local residents, representative from Middlesbrough Leisure Services and local Councillors. Like all community projects it has been a long and slow process but there does appear to be light at the end of the tunnel.
Successful bids for funding means that extensive renovation work can be carried out on the barn, and courtyard. In the recent weeks you will have noticed the builders have moved into Lingfield Farm (not the new Pub!)
The farmhouse has been used as a Community centre for over 3 years. It is used on a daily basis by different organisations, hosting a variety of events and activities. This year sees the return of the Summer Playscheme in July/August, a very popular and well attended event.
The Community Centre is home to Coulby Newham Junior Football Club. At present one of the fields is in the process of being ploughed, graded and seeded to create a good quality ' football pitch.
Coulby Newham Scouts and Cubs also meet at the Centre and are looking forward to using the large barn for their activities At present their numbers are limited due to lack of space. The renovation work is on target to be completed by the end of September. This is when your help is needed. If you would like to help in any way please come to our next meeting. Are you part of an organisation interested in hiring a room? Come and find out what is happening. Whatever the reason, you will be made welcome.
The next meeting at Lingfield Farm Community Centre is MONDAY 4 SEPTEMBER at 7.00pm

COULBY NEWHAM JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

Coulby Newham Junior Football Club was established in 1996 to provide a much needed sporting facility for children in the Coulby Newham area. Previously local children had to travel to Marton, Nunthorpe, or other clubs further afield to play football. As a well organised Club Coulby Newham Juniors provides a focal point for children within the area, and provides them with enjoyment and exercise, together with a sense of discipline and community spirit. The emphasis at the club is put very much upon enjoyment and not upon winning. At the present time the club coaches over 100 children from Coulby Newham and the surrounding area.

We have proved this year that allowing children to enjoy playing football without the constant pressure to win at all costs, does not mean we cannot be successful. Coulby Newham teams won the following trophies during the 1999/2000 season:
  • Teesside Junior Alliance Under 15's division 4 runners up and promoted to division 3
  • Cleveland Youth League Under 11's runners up and League Trophy winners
  • Cleveland Youth League Under 10's Challenge Cup runners up & Fair Play Trophy winners
  • Cleveland Youth League Under 8's Fair Play Trophy winners

During the past 12 months our players have enjoyed many activities away from football including sponsored walks, Christmas parties, swimming, camping weekends and canoeing. We have also sent our players on team building days where they have to undergo certain tasks while suspended high up among the treetops with their team mates on the other end of the rope. We believe events such as this are vital in both rewarding the players for their efforts during the season and to help them develop both individually and as a team.

The Club has been working hard to develop sporting facilities at Lingfield Farm. In co-operation with the Council we have begun work on the barns and in building paths. We have also applied to Sport England for funding for as a mini-soccer venue.

The Club coaches all children from aged 5 to 16. If you want to Come along to one of our training sessions please contact Charlie on (01642) 592330.

Autumn 2000

Hi Folks,

Well, here we go, into another glorious summer and once again it's off to unwind and drench ourselves both in the sun or the cool, cool sea. Some of you, no doubt, will be whisking yourselves away on the next plane to Majorca or wherever (don't forget your sun tan lotion), but no thanks, not for me, I'd rather wallow in good old British weather, whatever, and tuck into a dollop of fish and chips on Whitby pier, Here we go then...........
A few changes with the Community Council and lots of new building developments ahead. On the Monday 3'" July, 2000, the Coulby Newham Community Council held its Annual General Meeting. Owing to a change in the constitution for all Community Councils, as set by Middlesbrough Council, the Chairman would now be an elected resident and the seat would no longer be taken by a Councillor. This therefore saw the end of our long standing Chairman, Councillor Paul Thompson, a resident and dedicated worker in this community who contentedly stepped down to make way for his successor. Many thanks were given to Paul for his 10 years commitment to the Community Council and for all the achievements that we have shared with him. The elected officers for this new Community Council now stand as: Chair, Liz Wa1ker, Vice-Chair, Joan Cook, Secretary, Geoff Wishart, Treasurer, Linda Christie. In the very short future a new Executive Committee will be elected. These will be, the elected committee and one member from each of the

On the development front, the Health Centre is finally ready to make some movement over near the recycling facility. Don't forget the recycling banks are only moving a little way up the road. Safeway's new shop with car parking space, to be built on the land near to Iceland is still ongoing. Over near Great Mills and McDonalds, plans are going forward for the Health and Fitness Centre
(Ballentyne's), and three units, The new
Lingfield Farm pub is now open and making many people welcome, and the other Lingfield Farm (Community Centre) is under construction in developing a new Training Centre for Rural Work with improved community and sports facilities.

Bye for Now

A letter from our new Chair Liz Walker

Hi, Liz Walker here,

On behalf of everybody involved in Community Council, I would like to thank Councillor Paul Thompson for all the work that he has put in as Chair of Coulby Newham Community Council over the past 5 years.
Paul has put in a lot of effort and hard work into the community. Most evenings, leaving his family at home, attending meetings to make sure Coulby Newham stays a brilliant place to live. Paul was a marvellous Chair of Community Council and is an excellent Ward Councillor. Nothing is too much trouble for him to sort out for our community. He will be strongly missed as our Chairman, but I'm certain he will still be involved with our meetings. (Keeping us on our toes), and as always putting a lot of hard work into his Ward Council duties along with his other colleagues, John Geoff Cole and Terry Ward.
It has been a pleasure to work alongside Paul as Vice-Chair. Paul is a hard act to follow, but I will try, to the best of my ability, to keep up to his standards. Once again, Thank you Paul for everything.

Liz Walker, Chair of Community Council
