Some hints from Arundale Mazda, at Coulby Newham on what to do in an emergency, and on how to protect your car from thieves.

Having your car regularly serviced, is of course the best way to avoid break-downs, but there are some simple things that you can do yourself to avoid trouble and inconvenience:
  • Each week, check that the oil level is correct in your engine carry a container of suitable oil for topping up
  • Each week check that the water levels in the engine filler tank and windscreen washers is OK A visual check is all that is needed.
  • At the start of winter, have your antifreeze checked to avoid frost damage.
  • Each week check that your tyres are at the correct pressure
  • Always carry a small torch, change, or a mobile telephone and the numbers you would need to get assistance. Carry weatherproof garments, it will be raining

What to do if you do have an emergency:
  • Try to stop your car so that it isn't blocking other traffic or causing an obstruction.
  • Put on your hazard warning lights. These are marked with a red triangle.
  • Attempt to get assistance from your breakdown cover provider. If you are unable to do this, hide all valuables in the car, lock it and seek assistance by going to some pub1ic place, a shop, a filling station etc.
  • Don't leave children alone in the car.
  • When you have called assistance, return to your car and wait. Lock yourself in if you feel threatened.
  • Don't sit in the car in a dangerous place in case another vehicle collides with your car (Especially on fast dual carriage- ways)

    How to avoid car crime.
There are some simple precautions to take to make your car less of a target for car thieves and people who want to steel your belongings.
  • Always try to park in a well-lit and conspicuous place. Avoid areas that show signs of trouble, i.e. broken window glass.
  • Always remove your radio front or the complete set. Don't leave it in the car. leave the glove box open to show that it isn't inside
  • Remove all your things, especially clothing or shop bags and put them out of sight in the boot
  • If you leave your mobile telephone in the car, switch it off, it's ringing will attract thieves.
  • Make sure that you have closed all windows and that all doors and the boot are locked
  • If your car does not have an imobiliser, have one fitted, preferably with a visual warning light.

May/June 2000

Hi Folks,

Well, we're into May and wasn't I just right about how nice the flowers would look around Coulby's grassland borders. Didn't they just make the area look colourful? I'm only too glad that I didn't get too involved with the planting because I don't seem to have very much luck when I plant any bulbs, still the hyacinths, tulips and daffs that I stuck in the back garden did manage to come through this time. I'll never make a good gardener. Bye the way, I was just thinking. It is said that when you retire, you usually take up gardening. 'What do gardeners do?'

Here goes then. Out shopping a few weeks back, on a lovely hot day (well nearly) I saw the Cleveland Search and Rescue Team out and about canvassing for some funding (A worthy charity). After popping some coins in the box and receiving a sticker I was tickled pink with their superb slogan, "Get Lost," How unique. I think they should base their headquarters here in Coulby Newham as I'm sure this place, for any visitor, must be the ideal place to get lost. And why? Well, we seem to have estates, roads, buildings and organisations with very similar names. Like, the Manor House, Manor Farm, Manor Farm Way, Coulby Manor Farm, Coulby Farm, Coulby Farm Way, Grange Farm, Newham Grange Leisure Farm, Newham Hall, Newham Way, Lingfield Ash, Lingfield Ash Community Centre, Lingfield Park, "Lingfield Farm Community Centre", Bonnygrove, Bonnygrove Farm, Foxhowe, Foxgloves, and to add to the confusion the new Public House is going to be called "The Lingfield Farm" any more surprises?????
Well anyway, congrats to the person for thinking up such a unique name. I would have thought, as my "Mysterious Well Wisher" suggested that "Mills and Boon" would have been a most appropriate name. After all, Great Mills is over the road, and the pub will be a Boon to the area. But, yet again, that might have contravened the copyright laws. Oh! By the way, did you know that a planning application has gone forward for permission to build some kind of Leisure Complex in the same area? Now if they have a similar naming competition I've thought of a super name for it. We could call it the "Rainbow Leisure Centre." Why not? You've heard of cloning haven't you? Just think, two Coulby News, two Lingfield Farms, so why not two Rainbow Leisure Centres for a hat trick. Yippee!

Well it certainly looks like there's going to be some movement towards building the Health Centre. If you read the last issue of the Coulby News, the Hemlington Team gave a write up and in this issue it is the Coulby Team. So please keep a watch out for construction works, and please, if you notice that the recycling banks have moved, 1ook around nearby for them, please don't dump your stuff on the same site.

Coulby Newham's Community Council appears to be going to continue in more or less the same fashion as before, though I'm, like everybody else, sti11 uncertain as to whether there are going to be any other changes, So just keep watching this space for further news.

It seems that Iceland shop sells such top quality goods that someone keeps kicking their windows in to get them instead of using the front door. It's a bit like our community centre at Langdon Square. If it's not the windows that get smashed, it's graffiti all over the walls. Over the last Bank Holiday weekend, we had a lad on the roof, damage has been done to many tiles and one skylight has been cracked. If any person living nearby sees anyone acting suspicious around the centre, especially at weekends would you please contact the police straight away. Don't forget, this is your community centre also.

On a last note, Sunnyside Playscheme is still ongoing. The playschemes start later in July this year. Plans for some fund raising socials are in mind, and the Halloween Party will go ahead this year, I promise. Also, watch out for any events going on here at Langdon Square during the summer hols.

MATTERS ARISING

Thanks to Council Engineers and everyone involved- the flooding problem near the footbridge between Lingfie1d Ash and The Garth has bean sorted Excess water now drains into the beck. After a weekend of flooding in other parts of Teesside the work has been well and truly tried and tested and proved successful.
Regarding the Church site at the corner of Foxgloves, Officials from the 3 Churches involved will be meeting Mid-July to once again discuss the question of building there.
The lights on the footpath between The Garth and Beechfield are now bright, except for just one, which has been reported again.

STUART GRANT. (GRANT & STIRLING)
They're definitely coming down! What are'? THE PYLONS!
BUT NOT TOMORROW as residents who attended tonight's meeting hoped to hear, especially as this is the second meeting to discuss the Forum S Pylons.
Mr Stuart Grant, representing the National Grid, said as soon as the Minister of State Stephen Byers MP gives the go-ahead, work will commence on the new route from Lackenby to York. Clearance has been given for 'Cleveland's stretch of new Pylons and Cable, there are a few points of detail yet to be sorted regarding the North Yorkshire stretch. To comply with Planning Rules work should commence before the end of 2003 at the latest. Work is almost certain to be started within months from now. The new Pylons/Cable power line will be 75m long from Lackenby to York and will carry 400,00 volts, replacing the present Pylons only 1ine of 275,00 volts. Smaller Pylons will replace the tall present structures above ground from Lackenby across Eston Hills to Nunthorpe then cabled underground south of Nunthorpe and Coulby Newham then above ground again at Newby. The cost will be £75m. Stuart said it would be too costly to cable all the way to York.
Stuart answered many questions:

  • Cables will be sunk 1.5m below the ground.
  • Land above cables cannot be built on. Deep-rooted trees cannot be planted above them but otherwise the restrictions aren't too bad.
  • Heat from cables will radiate to the surface.
  • Specialised firms will undertake the construction
  • Contractors will be working on several sections of the line at the same time; they won't just start at the beginning and plod on till the end.
  • Where Pylons/Cables cross farmers' land the farmer will be compensated by either a lump sum or rental.
  • The Pylons will only come down when the new line is up (and under) connected and energised.
  • Environmental and conservation issues are taken much more into account these days.
  • The land beneath the Pylons at Coulby Newham belongs to Middlesbrough Council etc. etc.

Thanks to Stuart for clearly explaining everything.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL INFO.

ABDUL KHAN
Abdul explained the Constitution of Community Councils and the allocation of £2,700 to each. He told the meeting that everyone in Coulby Newham will shortly be receiving a small Report Booklet detailing Coulby Council's achievements etc. to date.
He explained about Grants and that Applications for Grants must be from more than one person e.g. an Association or group of Neighbours, and when asked, gave some examples of Grants made to other groups in other areas. It was observed that, as Middlesborough councillors do not now sit on Committees, Community Councils should be thought of as Communal ward surgeries.
Councillor Cole, speaking for himself and Councillor Thompson, said they would always do their utmost to attend every Community Council meeting in their ward area. He then outlined some items of the Constitution and the way Planning items are considered. He showed around Plans for 3 Units and a Fitness and Leisure Centre across at the Great Mills site (Site '0') to complete development there. Abdul acknowledged the fact that in all areas there is a small percentage of attendance in relation to the number of Agendas delivered. It was observed it was just as well here as everybody wouldn't be able to get in the room. 8ome present believed Middlesbrough Council really wants Community Councils to fail.
Abdul encouraged everyone to attend the AGM in July and support our Community Council enthusiastically in a 'rally the troops' finale.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

The Chairman passed on the information that The new
Health Centre Building at the Parkway Centre really will happen. One or two formalities have to be sorted out then 'action'. That's definite!
PLEASE! OPEN THE OUTSIDE LOOS! What a waste of a local asset! We want visitors to come and shop at Coulby but when they want to 'go' it's panic stations.
A resident said people would pay to go in. Much agreed on! Also the roof is in need of checking before it deteriorates further. The Bottle Bank at Lingfield Farm is causing some problems because of bottles being taken out and thrown about by youngsters resulting in broken glass on the road. Could the Banks be moved? Several Committee members of Lingfield Park Steering Committee were present tonight and as there is to be a meeting at Lingfield Farm 7.00pm Monday i2th June. (a week tonight.) Agreed to have a look at the situation on site then. Could something be done about all the litter around our area PLEASE! The becksides and verges/footpaths on the south side of Stainton May are in need of attention. These are all walking routes to the new Pub as well as to the District Centre and unpleasant to meander along And the opening of the new 'Lingfield Farm' Pub is imminent. Hope to see you there! Cheers!

The Chairman thanked all who attended.
