Hi Folks,

We're still into Spring, or so I have been told. The daffodils and tulips are still in bloom. But, didn't we have one of those 1ovely hot summer days in early May??? Or was that the only bit of summer that we are going to get.
Thank you to all who attended the Public meeting about Policing Issues in South Middlesbrough. It was quite a good turnout and very vociferous. The main points of the evening was the concern of youths drinking on the streets which eventually leads to anti-social behaviour. It was decided from this discussion that we should ask the loca1 authority to request a law to ban the drinking of alcohol in open public places with the support of a petition. You will find the petition on one of the pages, so if you support it, sign it and get it back to us as soon as possible.
It won't be long now when you will be making your appointment with the doctor at the new surgery, off Dalby Way. Should be opened by June.
Please note: If anyone is seriously ill and in need of 'prompt' specialist treatment, (free) the quickest way to get off the waiting list and get in first is to rob the next mail train, spend all the money on a luxurious and lavish holiday then come back and get banged up in the hospital nick. Now that's what I ca11 a first class service. And who says crime doesn't pay?
Bannatynes, in the other corner must be nearly ready for opening too. The outside 1ooks practically finished and work on the inside looks as if it is in pretty good progress.

The Teesside Hospice are looking for volunteers, so if you have a few hours to spare and can offer some support, please pop in to the shop at the Parkway for more information. And whilst you are there, sign the petition at the bottom of this page (on the other side) and hand it in.
It may be correct in saying that there may be a referendum to decide the kind of loca1 government system wi11 be set up in Middlesbrough for the future and even voting for a Mayor, If you like you can vote for me for Mayor -- 'If I ruled the world"""""""""'""

Well that's it for now Folks
Your Sec Geoff Wishart

COULBY NEWHAM JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLU8 UNDER 16'S TRIP TO SPAIN

Firstly, I would like to thank Coulby Newham Community Council for their donation which helped us purchase Polo Shirts and Pennants to take to Spain.
The 'COPA MARSENE' took place in the Malgrat Region of Spain. It attracted teams from all over Europe. There were 48 teams playing in our group alone which meant that the 12 Group Winners and 4 next best went through to the Knockout Stages. Despite being beaten only one and finishing 2nd in our Group we failed to qualify for the next stage by one goal. We didn't let this get us down and everyone had a good time and we are saving to go again next year
I would like to thank the Kids for being so well behaved out there
.

In the League, we started the season well leading our Division up until Christmas. After the break we 'did a Boro' and started to slip down the League, the difference being we realised earlier than them that we did not like getting beaten and ended the Season on a winning streak finishing a healthy 3rd, just 3 points behind the winners.
UNDER 10 A TEAM
The Under 10's A Team beat Hartburn Juniors in the final of the GAZETTE LEAGUE TROPHY. In a thrilling final, which could have gone any way, Sean Sansom scored the only goal of the game to win the Cup for Coulby.
UNDER 10 C TEAM
Under lOC Team had a nice surprise for them when they went to the GAZETTE Presentation Night, held in the Acklam Steel Works Club. They walked away with the FAIR PLAY TROPHY. There was an even bigger surprise for Sam Nixon who won the League Player of The Year Award. Congratulations Sam and Well Done'
I would like to congratulate all our Teams for the way they've played this Season and wish them all the best for next Season. I'll end now buy saying a big 'THANK YOU' to all our Sponsors and Supporters
Hope to see you all again next Season.
Thanks MICK FAWCETT
PS We are looking for new players for all age groups for next Season, especially Under 11 girls Anyone interested can phone me Tel 276704 or Charlie johns Tel 592330 or just turn up at Lingfield Farm on a Saturday morning.
WELL DONE COULBY NEWHAM JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS AND DEDICATED COACHES WE'RE PROUD OF YOU ALL

Minutes of the meeting hosted by Coulby Newham Community Council 30 April
'POLICING IN SOUTH MIDDLESBROUGH

The meeting at Langdon Square Community Centre on Monday 30 April was attended by 100 people from Coulby Newham and surrounding estates south of Ladgate Lane.
It would not be out of order to say that most of the meeting was devoted to youngsters, their activities in Coulby Newham giving particular cause for concern. The availability of drugs and under-age drinking are contributory factors to their escalating crime here.
Guest speakers were Councillor Ken Walker, Chairman of the Police Committee, Chief Superintendent Dave Lumb, Cleveland Constabulary and Councillor Eddie Dryden, Cabinet Commissioner for Law and Order.
It was acknowledged that most youngsters are great and law abiding. Others are responsible for the increasing amount of vandalism - broken windows (in the last 6 months replacement windows for Langdon Square Centre cost £2,000) Sunnyside Information Centre has bricked up some windows now. Schools are continually being damaged. The Parkway Centre too. Graffiti spoils walls and windows. Dropped cartons, cans and bottles have to be cleared up.
Car crime here was highlighted, mostly 'breaking into' and 'stealing from' A plea was made for more security in public car parks. Cars parked on drives/roadsides overnight are at some risk, too.
When offending youngsters are charged, most will be back on the streets in hours. (House Burglars will be detained. They will always go to prison) Thank fully house burglary isn't a major problem here. But figures show 83% young offenders never offend again. It's just that minority.
Chief Superintendent Lumb outlined successes of the Drug Squad. Excellent news.
Of particular concern to the meeting was the number of slow responses or no responses at all to calls for assistance.
Examples were given of some 999 calls. Some incidents involved violence. Residents were appalled by this.
17 new Policemen are due to come to Cleveland Constabulary.
May we have some for this area to help our overstretched officers, PLEASE?

Councillor Paul Thompson asked about more Specials and paying them for their part-time Police work.
Also, would Middlesbrough Council discourage any future requests for Liquor Licences at Coulby Newham?
With this in mind, a call was made to declare the area south of Ladgate Lane an Alcohol Free Zone. This would empower the Police to arrest anyone drinking outside in a non-licensed area.
Applause!!
Voted for unanimously!
Councillor Walker said he was involved in setting up an Alcohol Free Zone in Stockton and knew it could work and if residents show this is what is wanted here, he would support the move. Chief Superintendent Lumb and Councillors present also supported the move. A petition was drawn up there and then.
If you wish to support an appeal for this area to be declared an Alcohol Free Zone within public open spaces - please either sign one of the petition sheets in Circulation or you can complete the tear off slip in the Coulby News and hand it in at the Hospice Shop at the Parkway Centre, Coulby Newham ASAP

Window Displays

Don't display expensive ornaments or figurines on window sills or in full view of windows!!
in the Marton area, garden ornaments have been used to break windows, and allow thieves to grab anything within reach.

COULBY NEWHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
At the last Community Council Superintendent Strange was invited to contribute an article to this edition. He has asked me to write, not so he can dodge the writing but because he believes a local officer can answer local problems.
The main concern at the meeting was the anti-social behaviour of local young people, especially when congregating in large groups and drinking alcohol. The local Community Police team is fully aware of these problems and is striving to eradicate them. The Mounted Police and Dog Section officers have assisted us at peak times.

What became apparent at the meeting was that many people are confused by the law and have misconceptions about what we can do about 'anti-social' behaviour. Perhaps the following points will give a simple explanation of some of the issues.

  • It is not an offence merely to stand in a public place even in a group.
  • It is not an offence to drink alcohol in the street even if underage.
  • If a person's behaviour is disorderly, threatening or abusive that can constitute an offence but it has to be in the presence of a Police officer or a witness who is prepared to attend court.
  • Under The Public Order Act we can warn people about their behaviour and ask them to moderate it or to move away.
  • The Police can confiscate alcoho1 from persons under 18 in a public place and from those over 18 if it is suspected that they may supply it to underage people.

Finally on the issue of young people I would like parents who are reading this to ask themselves 'Is my son and daughter causing problems?' Because a11 the children we have to deal with are someone's son or daughter.

With darker nights here and Christmas right around the corner
We would like everyone to remember the basic crime tips.....

  • · Leave a light on or consider a timer switch.
  • Do not leave presents on show.
  • Lock doors and windows.
  • Keep curtains closed after dark especially if going out. Check callers ID's before allowing entry, if in doubt ask for a contact telephone number. A legitimate caller will not mind waiting.

Secure Your Garden Ornaments and Furniture!!

Things aren't so bad in Coulby Newham but don't become complacent. Walk-in thefts are still occurring here. They don't just happen in the summer. Even if you are in the house keep doors & windows locked, unless they are within your view. One or two folk have been victims of dash-in and bag-grabs.
Car crime won't go away. It hasn't reached epidemic proportions but some older types of Vauxhalls have been either stolen or broken into. If your car is parked on the road overnight - do everything you can think of to deter the thief.
Garden ornament and equipment thieves are around again. If it can be lifted it can very easily disappear from your garden. Don't lose out to the thief get your valuable treasures post-coded. A lovely fawn ornament was stolen recently, so if you spot a stray Bambi whilst on your travels, please give Coulby Police Station a Ring, 326326.
